I have gained a lot of knowledge about linguistics from my time studying Elvish. I have had a chance to research a famous philologist and learn about his academic career. I have learned more about the process that went into creating a language and the many years it took. I have also gained a better understanding of how a language of prestige could influence other languages. Eldarin was the language that all of middle earth’s languages were built around. The elves have always been a race of power and because of that their influence spread. Finally, I gained a better understanding of phonetics and morphology. It was interesting to learn about the choices Tolkien made to create a language he found to be aesthetically pleasing. There are sounds such as the [z] that were eliminated just because Tolkien did not find the sound appealing. I found the morphology interesting because Elvish used a system of root words and suffixes that are similar to English, and as I was studying Elvish I had to gain a stronger grasp of the morphological rules of English.
